This study shows that there is a deep connection between the legal regime of cooperatives, which is based on a set of principles and values defined by the International Cooperative Alliance and that integrate the concept of cooperative identity, and gender equality. Democratic governance, which characterizescooperatives, imposes a regime of balanced representation between women and men in the management amd supervisory bodies of cooperatives. However, the data provided by CASES Credential Portal shows an unbalanced representation. It is necessary to adopt positive measures, such as gender quotas, which ensure a balanced representation between men and women in cooperative bodies.
