The essay provides an original analysis of the contribution the literature and scientific debate on the gift can offer in terms of alternative paradigms to rethink politics and ‘the political’. In this light, particular attention is paid to the investigation of three intellectual contributions on the matter, respectively focused on: the ethical and political value of the gift as the founding element of altruism and a stable social policy (Titmuss); the gift as a particular, alternative form of social contract that can produce peace and (re)conciliation without being Hobbesian (Sahlins); the founding value the gift assumes in relation to the political in the elaboration of Caillé and the M.A.U.S.S.
