  • This is a study of the subject in four sequential periods. Homer is representative of «the civilisation of dishonour»: his heroes believe that a divine, external agent rules over them. With Euripides and Seneca it is passion which hinders the use of Reason; the second believes it to be opposed to the stoic ideal of apatheia. Finally, with Saint Paul, sin is the external agent that leads man's conduct astray.
