El dominio del mar en los siglos XVI y XVII entra- ña un triple cambio de paradigma: el eje medi- terráneo queda desplazado por el eje atlántico;
el imperio aristocrático hispánico cede el cetro ante la hegemonía burguesa británica; y la tra- dicional cosmovisión católica —caduca, incapaz y pesimista— se muestra paralizada ante la mo- derna cosmovisión anglicana —liberal, dinámica y optimista—. La lucha por el control oceánico la decidirán circunstancias científicas —nuevos mo- delos y técnicas navales—, económicas —comer- cio americano— y sociales —ascenso de una clase social y de una generación de personas con ini- ciativa—. La literatura presenta huellas y expresio- nes notables de estos cambios: los Robinsones.

Dominion over the sea during the 16th and 17th centuries entailed a triple paradigmatic shift: the Atlantic axis displaced the Mediterranean axis; Bri- tish bourgeois hegemony seized the scepter from the Hispanic aristocratic empire; and the modern Anglican worldview (liberal, dynamic and optimis- tic) challenged and paralyzed the traditional Catho- lic one (faltering, incapable and pessimistic). In the struggle for oceanic control, scientific (new models and naval techniques), economic (American trade) and social (rise of a social class and a generation of people with initiative) means were decisive. The li- terature of the time presents remarkable traces and expressions of these changes —i. e. the Robinsons.
