The Spanish flu, one of most devastating sanitary plagues that humanity has experienced, raged in Italy for almost one year from the spring of 1918, whilst the world lived through the last year of the First World War. The historic and epidemiological enquiry on the Spanish Flu proposed by the article leads towards a demographic observation of its consequences: In spite of the remarkable difficulties in estimating the real mortality rate caused by the flu and its complications, the reported figures show an extremely high number of deaths, caused as much by the flu-like pathology as by the general increase in mortality, even provoked by diseases normally not associated with the flu.
