Resumen de London cyclist deaths belie a safer reality

Linda Geddes

  • With six deaths in two weeks, one might think Londoners would be crazy even to consider taking to two wheels. But the facts tell a different story. Over the longer term, cycling in London actualy appears to be getting safer. Between 1994 and 1998, the average number of cyclists killed or seriously injured (KSI) in a year was 567, compared with 515 from 2008 to 2012. That's a fall of 9%. At the same time, there has been a huge rise in the number of cyclist--176% since 2000. Admittedly, there has been an upturn in KSI in the past few years. For example, 673 cyclists were killed or seriously injured in 2005 to 2009 period. It's too soon to say whether this is a genuine trend. Even if it is the start of an upward trend, the number of people cycling in London went up by 61% during this time, so any rise is matched by a rise in cyclists.
