Motivos por los que los emigrantes españoles se inscriben en el registro consular

    La inscripción en el registro consular no es obligatoria para los emigrantes españoles. Conlleva, no obstante, una serie de ventajas que propician, antes o después, su realización. En este artículo se identifican y analizan los principales motivos que animan a ello a los emigrantes españoles. Se toman como base fundamental los datos e informaciones obtenidos a través de una encuesta cuantitativa y entrevistas semiestructuradas realizadas a más de cuatro mil españoles residentes en el extranjero. Se concluye que los principales motivos para llevar a cabo esta inscripción son los relacionados con el ejercicio de derechos y deberes ciudadanos (especialmente el de sufragio en elecciones españolas) y el uso de los servicios consulares más conspicuos (renovación de documentos de identidad, inscripciones en el Registro Civil, etc.). Estos últimos juegan un papel decisivo para que acaben inscribiéndose los más reacios en principio a hacerlo. Otros motivos relevantes son los relacionados con la asistencia y protección (especialmente en países con mayores niveles de riesgo e inseguridad), así como con las ventajas fiscales y de cara al retorno a España.

    The registration in the register of Consular registration is not obligatory for Spanish emigrants. However, it involves a series of benefits that, sooner or later, their realization. In this article are identified and analyzed the main reasons which encourage it to Spanish immigrants. Data and information obtained through a quantitative survey and semi-structured interviews carried out over four thousand Spanish nationals living abroad are taken as a fundamental basis. It is concluded that the main reasons to carry out this registration are those related to the exercise of rights and obligations citizens (especially the in suffrage in Spanish elections) and the use of the most conspicuous consular services (renewal of identity documents, registration in the Civil Register, etc.). The latter play a decisive role so that the more reluctant in principle end up registering to do so. Other important reasons are those related with assistance and protection (especially in countries with higher levels of risk and insecurity), as well as tax advantages and face to return to Spain.
