In the first part of the paper, after presenting the most ancient meaning of the word irony (the Greek eironeia), the author examines some passages of Plato’s dialogues in order to apprehend a particular concept of irony founded on the paradox of a circularity from which it is impossible to come out. The second part is devoted to the discussion of the concept of irony developed by Alberto Savinio – one of the most ironic writers of twentieth century Italian literature – in his introduction to the selected works of the second century rhetorician and satirist Lucian of Samosata. In that introductory essay, Savinio articulated the paradoxical idea of irony as a form of «indirect love».

Dans la première partie de l’article, après avoir présenté la signification la plus ancienne du mot ironie (le grec eironeia), l’auteur examine quelques passages tirés des dialogues de Platon afin d’appréhender un certain concept de l’ironie, fondé sur le paradoxe d’une circularité dont il est impossible de sortir. La seconde partie est consacrée à la discussion du concept d’ironie développé par Alberto Savinio, l’un des écrivains les plus ironiques de la littérature italienne du XXe siècle, dans son introduction aux œuvres de Lucien de Samosate, le grand écrivain d’expression grecque du IIe siècle de notre ère. Dans cet essai de 1944, Savinio conçut l’idée paradoxale de l’ironie comme forme d’amour indirect.
