    El presente ensayo sintetiza las interpretaciones que se han ofrecido para explicar a las “Caritas Sonrientes”, creadas en el norte del estado de Veracruz en el periodo clásico tardío. Al mismo tiempo presenta una interpretación alternativa, que considera el uso de ciertas plantas alucinógenas y de la consiguiente aparición en los actos rituales de los “duendecillos del éxtasis”, tratando de comprender, en su complejidad, la originalidad y autenticidad de este fenómeno artístico.

    The actual essay offers a synthesis of the given interpretations to explain the smiling faces, unique creations from the groups that lived in the north of state of Veracruz in the late classic period. The author also essays an alternative interpretation, through the analysis of the rituals in which appears the little dwarfs of the ecstasy, the smiling faces linked to the old wisdom, trying to understand in its deepest sense the originality and authenticity of this artistic phenomenon.
