    Desde los tiempos de Alfonso X el Sabio, la política mediterránea de la corona de Castilla estuvo orientada a la conquista de los territorios del norte de África, que habían formado parte de la antigua Mauritania.

    Tingitania. Desde aquella época hasta el reinado de Carlos III fue tarea de los sucesivos gobiernos españoles el intentar hacerse con el control de la ciudad de Argel. Durante los años de 1758 a 1775 fue gobernador de Orán don Juan Martín Cermeño, actuando como tesorero del ejército y fortaleza de la ciudad el caballero palentino don Antonio de Tovar y Calvo.

    From the time of Alfonso X the Wise, the Mediterranean policy of the crown of Castile was oriented to the conquest of the territories in the North of Africa which had been part of the former Mauritania, Tingitania.
