This brief essay intends to explore the "essentialist" aspects of Gloria Anzaldtla's "seminal" work Borderlans/La Frontera: Towards a New Mestiza (1987). Considering Anzaldua's text within both a postmodern and postcolonial perspective, it is possible, the author maintains, to find tensions and implications that recommend a critical revision of her work. According to the author, Anzaldtia's can be reasonably understood as a contradictory space in which the tensions between utopian thinking and the pragmatism of progressive politics can be felt.
