The author discusses art's power to elicit strong, sometimes violent reactions in people. He describes an incident when one of his students called him a liar because he stated that depictions of the Prophet Muhammad were created during the Safavid period in Iran. Mention is also made of several attacks on art and artists including the assassination of the Dutch filmmaker Theo van Gogh and the defacement of the painting "The Holy Virgin Mary" by the artist Chris Ofili.
