In this article, the author reflects upon various issues relating to art in Singapore as of 2014. Particular focus is given to how Singapore declared independence in 1965 and how art did not figure as an important factor in building a nation. Additional topics discussed include the founding to the Nanyang Academy of Fine Arts (NAFA) in 1938, the opening of the Singapore Art Museum (SAM) in 1996 and the Sculpture Square non-profit independent arts organization.
