The article examines the work of the the Brazilian artist Leonilson (José Leonilson Bezerra Dias). Particular focus is given to the autobiographical nature of his art. Additional topics discussed include his contributions to the art scene of the 1980s, how he learned that he was HIV (human immunodeficiency virus) positive in 1990 and how he was inspired by his mother, who used to sew and embroider.
