  • The article profiles Oban, Scotland-born artist Charles Avery. According to the author, Avery's art is imbued with a formal beauty, humor and a spirit of philosophical inquiry rooted in the work of such diverse figures as Evelyn Waugh and Ludwig Wittgenstein. The author adds that Avery was able to describe the topology, cosmology and inhabitants of a fictional island through his 2004 project, "The Islanders."
