The Ketura Pillboxes are located in the former Republican vanguard of the Ubidea Sector, in a central part of the Áraba Front of the Spanish Civil War in the Basque Country (1936-1937). In 2017, we carried out a comprehensive archaeological investigation of this site in order to document its underground record, its architecture and dozens of examples of ‘war graffiti’ preserved on the concrete walls of the military structures. Socialist soldiers in the Basque Army inscribed these marks in the fresh cement as testimonies of their presence in this part of the front. Through an intensive research project, we propose to reconstruct the history of the site, focusing on its own materiality.
