Douglas reveals that how language emerged is one of evolution's biggest mysteries. Scientist Kazuo Okanoya sets out to explore how singing cements the intense bond between pairs of Bengalese finches and underpins their devoted parenting. His experiments might have implications for one of evolution's most enduring mysteries: the emergence of human language. His first step was to quantify the difference in complexity between the songs of munias and Bengalese finches. To do this, Okanoya and his collaborators divided the total number of different notes produced by each during a 2-minute performance, by the number of different note-to-note transitions over the same period.
