Spacecraft currently use radio waves to beam information back home. Laser signals carry more data, but the light is almost undetectable by the time it reaches Earth. Now, a nanoscale light detector could make such deep-space missives easier to read. So says Richard Mirin at the US National Institute of Standards and Technology in Boulder CO, who developed the detector with NASA.
