The Middle Kingdom building complex at Tell Basta, which was first excavated by Shafik Farid in 1961, was originally interpreted as a tem- ple, but later understood as a palace. In this arti- cle, it will be suggested that it might have been a “royal cult complex”. This interpretation is sup- ported by several finds from the building, which have not been fully published yet. New photo- graphs of these will be provided.
