Resumen de Numismatographie et numismaticite, nummophiles ou numismanes: note à propos de différents termes désuets

Hadrien J. Rambach

  • The curator of the Paris coin cabinet Théophile Marion du Mersan (1780-1849) argued that ‘numismatiste’ should be preferred over ‘numismate’. This sort of discussions was important at the time, considering that some scholars were still using antiquated terms such as ‘médailles’ instead of ‘monnaies antiques’. Numerous other words have been used in French over the centuries, such as ‘médaillistes’, ‘nummophiles’ and ‘numismanes’, and the question of which one to use continued for some more decades – until ‘numismate’ was adopted in the early twentieth century.
