This papers applies to numismatics the many benefits of Books Ngram Viewer, a tool launched by Google in 2010. Despite some methodological shortcomings, Books Ngram Viewer – thanks to a corpus of more than 15 million books – allows robust linguistic researches in several languages from 1500 up to now. We first consider some issues of terminology in French (‘médailles’ versus ‘monnaies’; ‘numismatistes’ versus ‘numismates’), before exploring more at length the place of numismatics in the long term (1750-2008): e.g. ‘numismatics’ versus ‘archaeology’, or ‘epigraphy’, and that in different languages (French, English, German, and Italian). The fluctuating weight of different subfields such as Roman or Greek numismatics is also investigated.
