  • Resumen
    • In 2013 Bland sought to investigate the scale of aureus production during the third century AD. He utilized a large dataset of single ?nds from most of the Western Empire and compared the results to die studies to offer general conclusions about the production of aurei. His analysis, however, did not make use of hoards because very few of these exist for the period of his investigation. Focusing on the Roman northwest, the intention of this paper is to determine whether aureus hoards produce the same coin ?nd profile as single finds for coins struck in the mid-first to second century AD. The Feldstraße hoard, with 2,518 aurei recorded to the RIC level, is of absolute importance. Other large hoards nearby (e.g. Liberchies and Arquennes) o?er valuable additional evidence. Through the use of hoards and non-hoarded coin finds, this paper also seeks to investigate the relative production size of aureus issues during the reigns of Nero and Vespasian in order to better contextualize the peak of Roman aureus production.
