Resumen de The Serra Orlando (Morgantina) hoard: a detailed study of its victoriati types and their characteristics

Pierluigi Debernardi, A. Manenti

  • The Serra Orlando hoard has already been analyzed by several authors and been recognized to belong to the very early stages of the victoriatus coinage. However no attempt has ever been made to typologically classify its ‘anonymous’ coins. They prove to be of great importance for determining the sequence of the first victoriati emissions, and allow a much better understanding of the Sicilian victoriati series, which form by far the major part of the hoard. Making use of the measured specific gravity of the coins, from which their fineness is inferred, we compare here for the first time the silver quality of the earliest victoriatus series with the probably contemporary Sicilian quadrigati, and find a clear match.
