Resumen de Overstriking and reminting in the Roman Principate: a general framework and some case studies in the provincial coinage

Bernhard Woytek

  • This paper provides a general outline of the phenomena of overstriking and reminting in the Early and High Roman Empire, with a special emphasis on provincial coinage. Overstriking seems to have been rare in the provinces; it had several different purposes: e.g., the renewal of Roman provincial coins worn out through prolonged circulation; the conversion of foreign coins circulating in newly annexed territory into Roman ones; the sporadic (and locally circumscribed) obliteration of civic bronze coins produced under emperors who had fallen victim to damnatio memoriae
