Resumen de Sociolinguistic patterns in Bergen

Helge Sandoy

  • The Bergen urban dialect, a dialect that dates back to the Middle Ages, has developed several distinct linguistic characteristics, and traditional social variants have also evolved. Thefollowing report presents evidence of a predominant homogeneity process among young people today. The findings show that only a small group of people in social group l actually use the prestigious variants, and significant sex differences are also lacking, with one exception. Even the traditional style shift is vanishing.

It seems äs if young people today emphasize loyalty toward localgroups, rather than social groups, afeature that is also emphasized in an investigation of self-reported speech.
