Resumen de Angle detectives

Walter Stark, Cathy Marks Krpan (coord.)

  • I decided to have my fifth graders from PS 108Q the Captain Vincent G. Fowler School tackle the Angle Detectives problem from the November/December 2017 issue of Teaching Children Mathematics. The problem asks students to apply their understanding of polygons and angles to determine the angle measurements of different polygons without using a protractor. I thought this would be a wonderful problem for my students to explore because it would review a concept that was touched on in fourth grade and allow my students to use reasoning skills to justify answers. This one problem would allow my students to put into practice many of the Common Core (CCSSI 2010) Standards for Mathematical Practice (SMP), especially SMP 3: Construct viable arguments and critique the reasoning of others. Being constantly involved in using the SMP throughout their journey through math is important for students because it provides them with a foundation of the way mathematician go about "doing the math."
