Language acculturation is a complex process subject to linguistic and sociolinguistic constraints. In order to speak a new variety correctly, immigrants must acquire new linguistic items and learn how to use them. When considering the variety of Spanish spoken by Italian immigrants in Montevideo, wefind that they display different strategies according to the characteristics ofthe linguistic items considered (the variants ofthe Spanish phonemes /X/, /z/ and /s/). Wefind also that these Speakers try to control specifically those items that have clear social Information, while other items whose social Information is not clear or irrelevant are acquired later (or even never acquired). The performance of the Speakers considered here varies according to their social level and length of residence.
