Resumen de The sociology of Berber: change and continuity

Moha. Ennaji

  • Rapid urbanization, the expansion offree education, and the dialect Status officially assigned to Berber have led to its regression. Not only has the number of Berber native Speakers relatively dwindled over the years, but also the domains in which Berber is used have become virtually restricted to home and conversation among intimate friends. Despite Ms noticeable regression, Berber still enjoys historicity and vitality. The recent revival of interest in Berber is directly linked to a change of officials' and people's attitudes toward Berber in North Africa. The results of the investigation I undertook among Moroccan university students reveal that the recent wide campaigns launched by the media and the progressive forces have largely sensitized people to the dose link between language and cultural identity, and to the advantages of linguistic and cultural diversity in this region of the worid.
