  • Resumen
    • Berber plays a crucial role in present-day Morocco. There are three good reasons for this. First, historically, Berber is the oldest language in Morocco; its use is reminiscent of the ancient Berber dynasties thatflourished in North Africa centuries ago. Second, linguistically, Berber has an important place äs it is the mother tongue of nearly half the population of Morocco, which interacts smoothly and harmoniously with the other mother tongue usedin Morocco, namely Moroccan Arabic. Third, culturally, Berber is an inherent ingredient of Moroccan culture and way oflife.

The recent official recognition of Berber and the project of teaching the language in Moroccan primary schools may enhance the place of Berber and will probably lead to its codification and standardization.
