Ethnolinguistic vitality and patterns of communication among the second generation of Iranian immigrants in Sweden

    • This study investigates the degree of ethnolinguistic vitality (language maintenance/shift) among the second generation of Iranian immigrants in Sweden and tries to identify the different patterns of communication that exist between them and theirfamily members. More specifically, the objectives of the study are (1) to assess the difference between those Iranian adolescents who were born in Sweden or who migrated to Sweden at preschool age, and those who were born in Iran and did not spend their crucial childhood years in Sweden, regarding home-language maintenance or shift (the major criteriafor investigating shift or maintenance are home language and Swedish language competence); (2) to identify the communication patterns among the second generation of Iranian immigrants and examine the effect of family background (parental education and occupation) on the shaping of communication patterns.
