Language choice in a multilingual society: the case of the Philippines

    • The paper examines and determines language choice in a multilingual society that is the Philippines. Identifiedare threefactors that exert tremendous influence on the peoples language choices, namely, (a) government and institutionalfiat, (b) regional ethnocentrism and ethnic disidentity, and (c) trends in media language choices. These three factors are studied in the context of domain, topic, and audience. On these basest the language choices for education and official communication, for specific regions, for higher education, for interpersonal communication, and for mass media and ads are specified. New directions on language choices and development are also identified.
