Este artículo analiza el libro El espejo humeante o The Smoking Mirror del artista ecuatoriano Eduardo Villacís, obra que recupera los elementos de una exposición museográfica del mismo autor. El objetivo es ver cómo Villacís, a través de su propuesta museográfica y libresca, problematiza los imaginarios coloniales constitutivos de la modernidad europea, que cobran impulso con la llegada de Colón a América, para plantear una visión crítica al presente a partir del paródico reflejo invertido del pasado, gesto que interpela al lector-espectador sobre la capacidad de romper los límites de la perspectiva desde dónde miramos y desde dónde somos vistos a la hora de fijar identidades.

In this article, I expose my analysis of the book El espejo humeante/The Smoking Mirror, by Ecuadorian artist Eduardo Villacís. His book gathers the elements of a museographic exhibit about the author himself. My analysis shows how Villacís, through a combined museographic and bookish proposal, questions colonial imaginaries that are so constitutive to European modernity and which could only pick up steam after Columbus´s landing on the Americas. His goal is to lay out a critical view of the present starting from a parodic inverted reflection of the past, a gesture that interpellates readers-spectators over their own capacity to surpass the limits of perspective. The book invites others to think deeply about the positionality of interpellation, particularly from which place does our gaze begin and from where the gazes of those others who are watching us back and marking our identity.
