  • Do "mixed" families in France give rise to "new" and durable cultures? The question can be examined by looking at the language practices of the children of French-Americans when they themselves become parents. Do they in turn transmit the English language — or the bilingualism — that their transplanted American mothers strove so hard to given them? Ifnot, what of their new, mixed culture? Do certain "second-generation" FrenchAmericans revert to monolingualism and monoculturalism when their turn comes to raise children, and/or are there factors other than language that carry on the new family culture implemented by their own parents, even if bilingualism can no longer be said to be its main characteristic?
