    No quadro da erudição dos séculos XVII e XVIII, a Academia Real da História Portuguesa, fundada sob protecção régia em 1720, definiu as regras da investigação e da narrativa histórica, propiciando a sociabilidade de letrados. Distinta das demais associações literárias do tempo, pela sua finalidade e reconhecimento, analisa-se o vínculo do monarca à instituição através do local em que decorreram as sessões – o Paço dos Duques de Bragança, em Lisboa –, evidenciando o projecto historiográfico, na linha de expressão da escrita da história setecentista, assim como o cerimonial da instituição em práticas simbólicas de definição e de relacionamento confraternal. De patrocínio real, no título e na afirmação da imagem do monarca, compreende-se a criação da instituição nas estratégias culturais e políticas de exaltação da soberania régia e de construção e legitimação do saber e do poder.

    In the framework of erudition of the 17th and 18th centuries, the Royal Academy of Portuguese History, founded under royal protection in 1720, defined the rules of investigation and historical narrative, providing the sociability of intellectuals.

    Distinguished from the other literary associations of the time, for its purpose and recognition, the link of the monarch to the institution is analyzed through the place where the sessions took place - the Palace of the Dukes of Bragança, in Lisbon -, evidencing the historiographic project, in line of the writing of eighteenth-century history, as well as the ceremonial of the institution in symbolic practices of definition and confraternal relationship. Of royal patronage, in the title and in the affirmation of the image of the monarch, we understand the creation of the institution in the cultural and political strategies of exaltation of the regal sovereignty and of construction and legitimation of the knowledge and the power.
