Memory Wound: architectural controversies in Norway after the 22 July attacks

    On July 22, 2011, the attacks in Oslo and Utøya perpetrated by Anders Breivik killed 77 people. National memorials to his victims were scrapped in 2017 following significant social protest. Through multiple site visits and interviews with key protagonists, this paper explores the Norwegian memorial controversies. The article draws on the work of Maurice Halbwachs in order to theorize how post-terrorist memorials are vulnerable to protest if they do are not strongly associated with the sites at which lives were lost.

    Le 22 juillet 2011, les attentats d’Oslo et Utøya, perpétrés par Anders Breivik tuèrent 77 personnes. Des projets de mémoriaux nationaux en leur hommage furent abandonnés en 2017 suite à d’importantes protestations. À partir de multiples visites sur les sites concernés et d’entretiens avec des protagonistes clés, cet article explore ces controverses mémorielles norvégiennes. Le travail de Maurice Halbwachs y est mobilisé afin de comprendre en quoi les mémoriaux post-attentats sont exposés à la contestation dès lors qu’ils ne sont pas fortement associés aux lieux exacts où les victimes ont perdu la vie.
