An attempt has been made to identify and discuss some of the factors in¯uencing children's language pro®ciency and the acquisition of early bilingualism in Hungarian-Serbian and Rusyn-Serbian bilingual settings in Vojvodina. Language use in the family and in pre-primary education has been in the focus of our scrutiny. The key issues are parents' attitudes toward minority language maintenance and institutional support in creating and implementing preschool programs for developing and cultivating the mother tongue, promoting additive bilingualism, and nurturing interculturality.
