    The central theme addressed in this article is Hume's analysis of the foundations of moral distinctions. The objective is to perform a description of humean thought in order to explain the sentimentalist basis of his practical philosophy. To clarify this approach, a study of the influence that reason and sentiments have on the motivational aspect of judgments of this nature will be made. The next step consists in presenting the principle of utility as an influencer on how distinctions between virtues and vices are made, in order to emphasize the preference for what is useful to society. This will be the main question to understand why Hume regards sentiments as essential to moral distinctions.

    O tema central abordado neste artigo é a análise feita por Hume acerca da fundamentação das distinções morais. O objetivo é realizar uma descrição do pensamento humeano de modo a explicar a base sentimentalista de sua filosofia prática. Para esclarecer essa abordagem, primeiramente será feito um estudo acerca da influência que razão e sentimentos exercem no aspecto motivacional de juízos desta natureza. O passo seguinte consistirá na apresentação do princípio da utilidade como influenciador de distinções entre virtudes e vícios, de modo a salientar a preferência dos sujeitos pelo que é útil à sociedade. Este será a questão chave na compreensão do porque Hume considera os sentimentos como essenciais às distinções morais.
