    • Sanguineti: Drama-writing and Camouflage · Among the incunabula of the 'Gruppo 63' there is the indeed memorable 1961 translation of Joyce’s Poems by an impressive team of translators, Giuliani, Aldo Rossi, Wilcock, and Sanguineti who was also to sign in the years to come a long series of important translations (Petronius’s Satyricon, 1970, Goethe’s Faust, Homage to Goethe, 2003), Homage to Shakespeare, 2004, Exercise Book, 2006, not to mention his Corneille, Molière, and Brecht). Taken together, Sanguineti’s translations, or his ‘imitations’ as he preferred to call them, might be defined as poetics in progress as well as a theory of culture with particular reference to his adaptations, or stage réécritures : Molière, Brecht, Corneille, Dante, Pirandello. The most famous among them, his adaptation of Ariosto’s Furioso, written for Luca Ronconi, was staged for the first time at the Orvieto Festival in the unconsecrated Church of St. Niccolò in 1969, and then re-adapted as an Italian Television serial also directed by Ronconi. It was a mass success to which Sanguineti, however, did not collaborate, and which he did not like.
