The article reports on the ways in which Indigenous communities have experienced exploitation by researchers and have been involved in participatory and decolonizing research processes. In the article the authors offer a case study of an intervention research project to exemplify a clash between Western research methodologies and Indigenous methodologies and discuss the implications for future research based on lessons learned from Native American community partners. The authors' views on the need for adapted Western research methods in research with Indigenous people are examined.
