The article discusses the automated mobile health (mHealth) intervention SmokefreeVET of the U.S. Department of Veterans Affairs in which smoking and tobacco use cessation and suicide prevention services are promoted through text messaging platforms. Topics include the associations between mental illness and smoking as risk factors for suicide, concerns regarding the lack of regular monitoring for user-generated time-critical messages, and the use of keywords to connect veterans with help.
