  • The article discusses water fluoridation in the U.S. and Canada and the opposition against it. Topics include the initial endorsement of water fluoridation by Canadian and U.S. medical, dental, and public health bodies in the 1950s, research in the 1940s and early 1950s that suggested fluoride may cause joint problems, heart and kidney disease, and cancer, and the emphasis of dental leaders and public health officials on the benefits of fluoride preventing tooth decay despite health concerns.
