The article discusses research regarding the possibility of a calorie offset regulatory mechanism to mitigate harmful health effects of unhealthy food production. Topics include an increase in obesity in the U.S. resulting in increased chronic disease epidemics and lowered life expectancy, an increase in the availability and a decrease in the cost of calorie-dense foods in the U.S., and the offering of subsidies to food and beverage corporations for evidence-based antiobesity interventions.
