Resumen de ¿A qué teme la Iglesia? El miedo católico en la guerra de Independencia venezolana, 1810-1814

En este artículo se ilustran las reacciones temerosas de la Iglesia católica frente al proceso de la guerra de independencia desatada en la provincia de Venezuela durante los años 1810 y 1814. Utili-zando la categoría del miedo colectivo, situaremos la conducta del arzobispo Narciso Coll y Prat para comprender cuáles eran los agentes amenazantes de la época, qué los movía y por qué se les considera-ban peligrosos para la estabilidad de la catolicidad y el régimen colonial. Por tanto, se instituye un miedo institucional que refleja la crisis de un sistema de valores de amplio espectro; pero también, el drama histórico, cultural y emocional que la clerecía tuvo que enfrentar desde el 19 de abril de 1810 en adelan-te: la República independiente.

This article illustrates the fearful reactions of the Catholic Church to the war of inde-pendence in the Province of Venezuela during the years 1810 and 1814. Using the category of collec-tive fear, we will tackle the actions of Archbishop Narciso Coll y Prat to understand what were the threatening agents of the time, what moved them and why they were considered dangerous for the stability of catholicity and colonial rule. Therefore, an institutional fear was established, reflecting the crisis in the system of values; but also the historical, cultural and emotional drama that the clergy had to face from April 19th 1810 onwards: an independent Republic
