El trabajo pretende mostrar de Carlos V, su talante conciliador y los grandes esfuerzos y concesiones que hubo de realizar según las circunstancias (pese a los enormes problemas de estado que afrontó, las fuertes presiones y las intrigas que sufrió), para tratar de conseguir la paz por la que tanto lucharía, y la búsqueda permanente de la unidad de la Cristiandad; destacando su paciente mediación, su espíritu universalista y ecuménico, a pesar de su gran convicción de orientación erasmiana, claramente católica sin ambigüedades, su convicción de que la Iglesia necesitaba ser reformada; su permanente petición de celebrar un concilio de unidad; así como su diferente actuación ante al protestantismo en Alemania (escuchando y mediando) a través de las Dietas y en España exigiendo que la inquisición actuara.
