  • Resumen
    • Paper that analyses the trickster and Internet trolls. It seeks to answer the question if the collective identity of the trolls can be considered as a contemporary trickster. In the introduction this article presents the motivations of both and analyses the importance of anonymity and collective identity in online trolling. Using the heuristic guide of the trickster of William J. Hynes, this paper compares the characteristics of the trickster (Ambiguous and anomalous, deceiver/trick-player, shapeshifter, situation-invertor, messenger/imitator of the gods and sacred/lewd bricoleur) with examples of collaborative practices of 4chan’s community. It describes interventions such as Habbo Hotel’s raid, moot winning the award as Time’s magazine “Most Influential Person in the World” or the trolling action to Tay, the artificial intelligence chatbot of Microsoft. This research concludes affirming that due to the indefinable nature of the trickster is difficult to confirm that the collective identity of the trolls can be considered as a new contemporary trickster. However, there are some characteristics that match with the trolls behaviour, therefore, sometimes the trolls act as such.
