  • The relation of art with power acquired certain specific conditions from the eighteenth century onwards and, especially, in the nineteenth century. In this period, not only art re-defined its essential parameters yet also did work and life (as a political concept). Along these centuries two models of modern production were defined -the industrial and the artistic- both tutored by instances of undoubted authority: the factory and the museum. Later on, in the twentieth century, coinciding with the decades of the sixties and seventies, it grew an awareness of the conditions under which power was exercised and of its alienating effects followed by practices of resistance that encouraged to exit the factory and the museum searching for other modes of life. The more recent history, however, uncovers the limitations behind these strategies for transgressing power. The following text, although briefly and acknowledging that the task is complex, points out ways of exploring the specificities of such limitations. At the same time, it is an invitation to practice self-criticism, especially to those who happened to have operated from within collaborative practices calling for the "revolution". Although, and above all, in the background lies a challenge to open a horizon. Knowing that, despite the complexity of the task, we are fully capable to look at the past, present and to use the path traveled to re-compose futures.
