In this chapter we offer a critical reflection on the names of the troubadours and the most innovative, state-of-the-art developments in their prosopography, as a result of research conducted on medieval documentation, both published and unpublished. The text is structured in four parts: (a) in the first one, we look at the difficulties posed by our lyrical poetry manuscript tradition regarding the names under which the poetic production of our troubadours was preserved; (b) in the second part, we discuss misunderstandings caused by surnames that are not nicknames, but toponyms; in the third part, we offer a summary of the problems caused by the absence of patronymics for the correct identification of troubadours; finally, in the fourth part, we highlight the importance of document recording. Although some recent hypotheses by several scholars are mentioned, we choose to introduce new identification approaches.
