  • The article discusses the health risk posed to animals and humans by the fungus Cryptococcus gattii as of December 2013. Background is presented on the outbreak involving the fungus on Vancouver Island, British Columbia, in 2001. It discusses the ability of the human immune system to neutralize most fungal attacks. The author says that the Cryptococcus gattii is different because it can make healthy people fall ill and it comes with a high mortality rate.
