The characteristic vibrational frequencies observed in carbon materials are discussed in terms of the stretching vibrational frequencies directly related to chemical bonding and carbon hybridization. The observed spontaneous Raman, resonance Raman and surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) spectra of fullerenes, carbon nanotubes and amorphous carbon are recollected. The ubiquitous carbon background commonly observed in experimental SERS is illustrated with examples from SERS of carbon and organic molecules on silver.
