Resumen de Using lidar data from space with correlative measurements of gas species and a microphysical model to quantify stratospheric processes

Patrick Hamill, Lisa Covey

  • The sulfur dioxide from a volcanic eruption on the Caribbean island of Monserrat was observed by the satellite borne Ozone Monitoring Instrument. This instrument tracked the plume as it crossed the Pacific Ocean. About two weeks later, at the location of the plume, the CALIPSO space borne lidar system observed an aerosol layer in the stratosphere. We used data from these satellite systems and a microphysical model and found excellent agreement between calculations and observations.
